Education
Our educational system needs to be updated and refreshed--
The conversation about what comes next is begining right now.
Although many wonderful things are happening in education and good intentions are everywhere, our educational system needs a meaningful transformation for the following reasons:
1. Stress Has Reached Unsustainable Levels:
As the focus intensifies on preparing students for admission to select colleges, stress and anxiety have reached record highs and it's affecting students, teachers, and parents alike. Over time, stress takes a serious toll on people. When an entire system becomes saturated with stress, it must be revamped for the health of everyone within it. That time has arrived.
2. Negative Trends Are Rising
Statistics related to anxiety, depression, loneliness, attention disorders and other issues continue to climb. While many schools now have counselors or wellness centers dedicated to addressing these challenges, the ultimate goal shouldn't be to manage the issues, but to keep them from surfacing in the first place. While a child is in our care, these numbers should be decreasing—not increasing—if we are really doing things right. The trends suggest that we are missing important areas.
3. Education Can Have A Significant Impact On The World At Large
We are all byproducts of our educational system and look at the current state of the world today. There is a lot of division, fighting and threats of war. People are stressed, full of anxiety and everything from cancer to autoimmune diseases are on the rise. Our educational system is our first major step into the real world, so this is the place where change—real change—can begin to reset the trajectory that we are on.
A Bigger, Bolder Vision for Education
For decades, the primary focus of education has been preparing students for college and high-paying careers, with character development woven in along the way. Although well-intentioned, this narrow emphasis has not produced the outcomes we had hoped for.
Education can become the first vital step that helps people create truly happy, healthy, and productive lives in every way. It can also help to build a world that is more balanced, connected, and compassionate. This goal is ambitious, but absolutely achievable and it’s needed. Having this type of broder impact that extends beyond just a person's career and considers entire lives and the world at large is much more significant and meaningful. It takes a lot of creative ideas and a fresh perspective to make it a reality and I offer that.
Join the Conversation!
Though a one-hour Zoom session, I will share perspectives and ideas about the changes that can help move education forward. I do not claim to have all the answers. Rather, I aim to spark creative thinking and open the dialogue about the shifts that needs to happen.
During the session:
New creative ideas will be shared that can be implemented immediately. Time at the end will be allocated for participants to offer their own thoughts and ideas if interested to do so.
I am going to take this conversations beyond schools. I plan to reach out to parents, colleges, and employers as well because real change requires a collective commitment.
It is time.
Hopefully, you will join a Zoom session and become part of the conversation about what comes nexst in education instead of just hearing about it and trying to catch up to it because change is definitely coming. It has to. It’s not optional, but a necessity.

Although we are doing a lot of great things in education and good intentions are throughout, our educational system is in desperate need of change for the following reasons:
-
As everyone focuses on what’s required to prep students to be accepted at select colleges, the stress and anxiety has reached record levels. The system is extremely stressful for students, teachers and parents alike and stress takes people down over time. Sooner or later, everyone will feel the negative aftermath of stress so when a system becomes inundated with it, it has to be revamped for everyone’s well-being. That time has come.
2. Negative statistics on a variety of issues ranging from anxiety and depression to loneliness and attention deficit disorder are all on the rise. Although many schools have a person or entire center dedicated to these issues, the optimal goal isn’t to have a bandaid fix that deals with the issues, but it should be to keep the issues from surfacing in the first place. The longer that a child is in our care, the more these numbers should be going down and not up if we are really doing things right. Clearly, we’re doing something wrong given the trends.
3. We are all byproducts of our educational system and look at the current state of the world today. There is a lot of division, fighting and threats of war. People are stressed, full of anxiety and everything from cancer to autoimmune diseases are on the rise. Our educational system is our first major step into the real world so this is the place where change—real change—can begin to reset the trajectory that we are on.
Education can do so much more than just teach students the basic subjects needed to get into a good college and to get a high-paying job, which has been the primary focus for a very long time with some pillars of character weaved into the mix. That focus hasn’t paid off the way we thought given all of the stress and negative statistics. Our educational system has to become bigger and bolder than that.
Education can become the vital first step that helps people to create truly happy, healthy and productive lives in every way and that makes this world a better place. This goal is ambitious but definitely doable and it’s so much more significant, meaningful, rewarding and important. To make this a reality, some things need to change and some new things need to happen.
Through a one hour zoom session, I will share thoughts and ideas about what those changes should be. I’m not suggesting that I have all of the answers, but I offers ideas and perspectives that will get creative juices flowing so we can all begin to have a conversation about the shift that needs to happen. Hopefully, you will want to be part of that conversation instead of just hearing about it because change is definitely coming. It has to.
During the majority of the session, ideas will be shared that you can begin to implement immediately if interested. Time will also be allocated for anyone who may want to share their own thoughts and ideas as well. In particular, input about something unique that you may be doing at your school that that has had a great payoff would be beneficial. By working together and sharing ideas, we can impact so many more lives in a positive way and reset the norms in education for years to come in the most positive and powerful ways.
I plan to share ideas with schools, parents, colleges and employers alike because we all need to get on board for real change to happen. And it’s time that it does. Hopefully you’ll want to partake in a zoom session and be part of the conversation.

My philosophy…
Research shows that the experiences that children have and the things they are exposed to (beginning as babies) can impact the neuron connections that are formed in their brains. Research also shows that stress inhibits optimal brain function and I think many of today’s approaches to learning and education are stressful for children. Thus, I’ve developed a list of tips and strategies that will help children to blossom in all of areas listed above—naturally! And that’s the goal!
The tips and strategies that I share are creative and they work. I firmly believe that if children engage in fun, rich experiences, the learning will happen naturally (without stress) the way learning is supposed to happen. Given that reading and writing form the foundation of all subjects throughout school, I put an added emphasis on tips that will help children to become solid in these areas—And the sooner you start the tips, the better! I also believe that things like being socially confident and appreciating good quality food can be cultivated in children. Lastly, our society puts a major emphasis on “developing smart children” (children who know a lot) and not enough attention on “developing great thinkers.” Meanwhile, great, creative thinkers are on the forefront of innovation, drive the the world's greatest inventions and become great problem-solvers as well. Thus, I make a point to share tips that will help children to think in new creative ways as well.
About me and the unique insight I offer…
As a 27 year stay-at-home mom, not only did I attend numerous conferences and do extensive research on child development, but I tried the tips first-hand with my own children so I know they work (I share some mistakes I made, too). In addition, my children spent a combined nine years in public schools and 13 years in three of the nation’s top private schools (And I spent my time volunteering in them) so I’ve acquired a wealth of experience and knowledge to share!
My children attended The Princeton Day School in Princeton, NJ, PDS, The National Cathedral School in Washington DC, NCS, and The Flint Hill School in Oakton, Va) so as a bonus discussion (if desired), I will summarize the differences between public and private schools (from an experience perspective) and will also shed insight on the difference between co-op versus traditional preschools from an experience perspective as well.
